I know these detailed lessons must be a lot of work…I sure appreciate them! My playing has improved quite a bit since I’ve been here, too. I guess we’re all staying good and busy, and outta trouble! Good for us!!! If only the rest if the world would join usNovember 8, 2014 at 8:39 PM #11572
Question 1, am I missing something, or is there no performance version of the rag showing what it sounds like? All the MP3s are jam tracks (no fiddle), and none of the videos show you playing it at speed…
Question 2, is it possible to play the song in standard tuning (even if you can’t do the notes you show with the calico tuning). I’m thinking I don’t really want to mess with the tuning on my fiddle, just for one song.November 8, 2014 at 10:54 PM #11576
This lesson is incomplete as of 11/8/14.July 18, 2017 at 6:10 PM #51670
I am most interested in seeing this lesson in standard tuning. It’s one of the songs I heard that inspired to to play. Thank you.July 18, 2017 at 11:08 PM #51697
Thanks for the reminder!August 6, 2017 at 7:37 PM #52509
Hello. I am new to the site and was delighted to find Black Mountain Rag being taught. I would love to hear the version you are teaching (in the calico tuning) at speed, but can’t seem to find it on the site. Where would I find it? Thank you!August 6, 2017 at 8:50 PM #52530
Hi Sandra, I updated the lesson to include Buddy Spicher playing the break that I teach below. I need to finish off the lesson in standard tuning!May 5, 2018 at 11:49 AM #60837
Would it be possible for you to teach (Blk. Mountain Rag) in standard tuning? (e-a-d-g)
This tune is the “MAIN” reason I signed up for your lessons.
Thanks so much,

I started that one a long, long time ago, in a far away galaxy, probably, and, like so many other great almost fiddle adventures of mine, got side-tracked because of busy stuff…too much busy stuff. I gotta get back to that one. I love that tune.May 5, 2018 at 11:00 PM #60856
YIKES! I can’t believe I haven’t updated this one. OK Consider it bumped back up to the top.May 6, 2018 at 5:13 AM #60864
Thanks, Thanks, Thanks soooo much, John !!
Like so many of your other slow, informative, fingering positions, easy to follow videos while you are teaching, actually playing the notes on the fiddle will, by me, be GREATLY APPRECIATED !! W/out a doubt John, I know you have soooo much on your plate all the time, but I will graciously wait till you find the time. You please have a blessed day!May 7, 2018 at 9:50 PM #60905
Thank you for the kind words! I will be able to work on this after Memorial Day.May 8, 2018 at 4:46 AM #60910
