Uncle Bunt cross-tuned his fiddle to G (or thereabouts) for this song. That means the he lowered the A and E strings down one full step to G and D, making them exactly one octave higher than the low strings. Some play this song with their fiddle cross-tuned to A. To cross-tune to A, simply raise the G and D strings one full step to A and E, so that they are exactly one octave lower than the high strings.
